Tuesday December 3, 2013 was a special day at Pearce Williams Christian Centre. Many people came out to see the ground breaking of Hume’s Hall. There were representatives from both M.P.P. Jeff Yurek’s office and Member of Parliament Joe Preston’s office among the almost 30 people gathered.
During the ceremony, those gathered were able to find out a bit about what the building design and layout will be. They were also able to hear from a few people who hold Pearce Williams close to their hearts. When referring to the donation made by Giles Hume this past summer of $450,000, Laura Penner, Chair of the Pearce Williams Board, said, “This is just the start of it. The seed that has been planted by Giles in this donation is just amazing because it is just a seed – it’s the beginning and the blossoming”.
Giles Hume shared with us a bit of his past, when he first came to Elgin County and the groups he joined and the places he visited. He said, “I came as a stranger and you took me in and those doors were opened to me. So, I think it’s payback time”. Hume’s Hall is to be built as a community hall/worship space. It will be a living memory for Giles and all that he has done in the surrounding community, as well as what he continues to do. As Jan Newell said, “while we enjoy this beautiful building, we can learn all about this very special man through the pictures, his newspaper clippings, awards, and stories – an inspiring life shared with his friends and community, and now, for generations to come, here at Pearce Williams”.
Construction is set to start on Hume’s Hall next week.
